Hike + Heal: catalina island

a collaboration with
sydney & barry williams from hiking my feelings

March 27-29 2020

After you arrive in Avalon on Catalina Island, join us for a welcome ceremony hosted by Hiking My Feelings Founder and Author, Sydney Williams. Hear the story of how hiking the Trans-Catalina Trail helped Sydney heal her mind and body, reversing her negative self-talk and Type 2 Diabetes in the process. Once we’ve wrapped up the welcome ceremony, we’ll head to our home for the evening: Two Harbors. When we arrive in Two Harbors, we’ll set up camp and get ready for an intimate dinner on the beach. Around the fire, get grounded before we set out on our first adventure: hiking from Two Harbors to Parsons Landing. We will set our intentions for the trip, answer any questions you may have about the hike, and Melanie and Kaleo will offer reiki healing around the campfire.

Greet the sun and warm up your body for the day’s hike with an all levels yoga class. We will begin with breath work to invigorate the body and awaken the mind. Our yoga practice will focus on sun salutations, warriors, and other yoga asanas to prepare you for the day ahead. After yoga feel free to take this time to yourself to sit by the water, work through some of the journal prompts, reflect on your first day on the island, and revisit your intentions for the hike today. Breakfast will be served on the beach and when we’re finished eating, we will pack up camp and head to the trail. Our first hike is approximately seven miles and we'll be climbing more than 1,700 feet over the course of the hike, enjoying photo stops at one of the highest points on the island with ocean views as far as the eye can see. When we arrive at Parsons Landing, we'll get our camp set up, stretch out, and get ready for dinner on the beach. After we eat, join us around the campfire to check in on the intentions we set for the first hike. How did the hike go? Did anything come up for you? Sydney will lead the group through a mindfulness journaling practice and Melanie and Kaleo will offer another reiki session as we chat. Before we go to sleep, we'll set intentions for the hike the next day and answer any questions you may have.

After a restful night’s sleep to the soundtrack of the Pacific Ocean, we rise on Sunday morning. We’ll keep our morning routine going, waking up for yoga and breakfast on the beach. After we pack up our campsites, we'll make our way back to Two Harbors. Our journey today is approximately eight miles and mostly flat. Enjoy a nice wide path for us to mix and mingle, walk and talk, or simply embrace the art of mindful movement. The trail for this portion of the hike weaves in and out of existing camps on the island, hugging the coastline and providing a unique view of mainland California as we make our way back to town. When we get to Two Harbors, we'll have lunch at the Harbor Reef restaurant and take the speed boat back over to Avalon. As a super special close to the event, your registration puts you on the VIP list for an intimate acoustic concert with Kaleo.

Your event registration includes your camping reservation at Two Harbors on Friday night as well as Parsons Landing on Saturday night.

We’ve partnered with Catalina Backcountry to haul your gear from Avalon to Two Harbors, Two Harbors to Parsons Landing, and Parsons Landing back to Two Harbors. What does that mean? If you’re unable to or you don’t want to carry everything you need with you while you’re hiking, our friends at CBC will transport your gear from campsite to campsite. If you’re planning on utilizing gear haul services, we recommend carrying a small backpack/daypack with water, trail snacks, and sunscreen while you’re hiking. Your tent, sleeping bag and everything else can be hauled by CBC.

Your registration also includes transportation from Avalon to Two Harbors and from Two Harbors back to Avalon. Participants are responsible for transportation to the island. We recommend taking the ferry via Catalina Express out of Long Beach. Regardless of how you plan to arrive on the island, you’ll want your tickets to arrive and depart from Avalon.

Catalina Backcountry will also be preparing and serving our meals and your registration includes two breakfasts and two dinners. We don’t include lunch in the cost of registration because every participant is different when it comes to eating on-trail. If you know you want a full lunch, there is a general store and restaurant in Two Harbors and you can pick up a sandwich there before we depart on Saturday morning. Feel free to bring your own snacks, but we’ve got the s’mores covered for the campfire.

When we return to Avalon on Sunday afternoon, we invite you to join us for an intimate acoustic concert with Kaleo. Participants of the event will have VIP access to the show. Please note, if you need to return to the mainland on Sunday evening, the last ferry out is at 7:30PM. To experience this event in all of its glory, we recommend making reservations at Aurora Hotel (tell them you’re with us, they’re offering a discounted rate of $99/room for Sunday evening) or camping at Hermit Gulch Campground Sunday night, and taking a ferry out Monday morning.

Greet the sun and warm up your body for the day’s hike with an all levels yoga class. We will begin with breath work to invigorate the body and awaken the mind. Our yoga practice will focus on sun salutations, warriors, and other yoga asanas to prepare you for the day ahead.

What is Reiki? From Reiki.org: Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Both Kaleo and Melanie are Reiki healers and will be offering collective reiki healing around the campfire each night.

At the root of what Sydney experienced on the island was a combination of all of the wisdom she had collected since she dove into personal growth and development back in 2010 when she started skydiving. There is nothing natural about jumping out of an airplane, so Sydney tapped into her prior experience as a collegiate athlete and did a lot of mindset work to cultivate peak performance in a stressful situation. In doing so, she finally unlocked how to speak more kindly to herself and was able to identify where her negative self-talk came from. Participants will be provided with a small journal to take notes in as they hike. Identify the soundtrack that plays in your head - what is it saying? Where do those things come from? When we get down to Parsons Landing, we’ll learn about limiting beliefs; why they are detrimental to our mental, emotional, and physical health. Learn how to cultivate empathy for yourself as Sydney facilitates a “hot seat” session where participants volunteer to share some of the things they experienced on the trail, and she will help reframe the soundtrack in your head. If you’re feeling stuck in this process, no worries! Sydney shares tips for how to get unstuck. NOTE: interactions will be facilitated in a group setting. If you’re interested in 1:1 attention during the event, please see the optional add-on below.

At the Opening Ceremony, Sydney will be sharing the story of how her two hikes across Catalina Island helped her heal her mind and body. Participants will receive a signed copy of the book and a limited-edition trail journal.

If you don’t have camping equipment or if you prefer to sleep a bit more comfortably than a traditional backpacking setup, Catalina Backcountry offers Comfort Camping for up to 8 people. Each tent is double occupancy (2 people per tent). This includes air mattresses, sleeping cots, sleeping bag, blanket, pillow, and a pop-up lantern. Catalina Backcountry provides on-site top-notch service and we’re excited to offer this option to you. If you choose to add comfort camping, please pay for full registration first and email Sydney@hikingmyfeelings.com to coordinate comfort camping. If you want to share a tent with a friend, please let us know, otherwise, tent mates will be assigned at random. If you want a whole comfort camping setup to yourself, the cost is $500.

Over the course of the weekend, Sydney will be available to answer questions, facilitate practical mindfulness, and share about her inspirational journey on the island in a group setting. If you’d like focused 1:1 attention while you’re on the island, Sydney has four 1-hour sessions available for participants who want to dive deeper:

  • Friday before the opening ceremony

  • Saturday morning sunrise walk + talk before yoga

  • Sunday afternoon session (between end of hike + concert)

  • Monday morning walk + talk
